Geoid

The geoid is an equipotential surface of the gravity field that best coincides with the mean ocean level and which extends under the continents. It is defined with reference to a certain altitude.

For France, it is set to a sealed zero level in the port of Marseilles. The geoid is a deformed surface to which mathematical relations cannot be applied.
