Germinal

The term germinal describes stem cells (i.e. precursors) of gametes, as opposed to somatic (all other cells in the body). A germinal mutation occurs in a gamete and can therefore be transmitted to the offspring of the person, in contrast to a somatic mutation which disappears with the affected cell.
