Microsoft Windows XP (Microsoft Windows NT 5) was the version of the Microsoft Windows operating system that succeeded Windows 2000 and Millennium. It was known by the code name Whistler when it was being developed. The Windows XP architecture is based on the NT 5.01 kernel, an improved version of the Windows 2000 kernel for the general public.
Windows XP was released on 25 October 2001. Two versions of the operating system flooded the market: Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional Edition. Specific versions were also released including a 64 bit edition and a tablet PC edition.
