Voice synthesis

Voice synthesis is a technique for transforming a text into a spoken message by converting the text elements, or graphemes, into sound elements called phonemes.

Phonemes are abstract elements. The processing then replaces the phonemes by the associated signal elements. (after an intermediate diphone stage).

Another technique consists in assembling segments of a previously recorded sentence, in order to build a complete sentence that can be used by an interactive vocal server.
