Core sampling

Core sampling is a sample taking technique: an auger is used to drill into a substrate to obtain a cylinder of matter.

Analysis of the cylinder stratification can be used to reconstruct soil composition (sediment sample), chronology (wood sample) or even the composition of the atmosphere in the past (ice sample).
