Polystyrene

Polystyrene (PS) is a polymer of which the monomer (the repeated species) is styrene, formed of a benzene ring attached to a CH-CH2chain. It is obtained from petroleum-derived products.

Polystyrene is hard and strong. It can be mixed with a gas to obtain a very light material. Polystyrene is used as thermal or acoustic insulation, in packaging (for protection from shocks) or low density filling (e.g. to obtain buoyancy).
