Limescale

Limescale is the chalky deposit that forms in water pipes and kettles.

Limescale deposited in pipes

Limescale deposited in water pipes and machines (boilers, washing machines, etc.) is caused by the precipitation of calcium and bicarbonate ions in water when it is heated. It forms a calcium carbonate deposit.

The amount of scaling depends on the hardness and alkalinity of the water.
