Carbene

A carbene is a highly reactive organic molecule with divalent carbon. It has six valence electrons and has the general formula R₁R₂C.

Methylene (the functional group with chemical formula CH₂) and dichlorocarbene (reaction intermediate with the chemical formula Cl₂C) are two frequently encountered carbenes.
