Like many exotic fruits, mango is mainly found on European markets in winter between December and February.
Nutritional value of mango
It has a moderate calorie count (60 calories per 100 grammes), and is a fruit rich in carotene, or provitamin A, and in vitamin C. It has preventive effects against premature cellular ageing.
One of the most produced fruit in the world, there are a few hundred varieties of mango. Amongst the most valued and sweetest varieties are the Kent and Tommy Atkins varieties.
Choosing a good mango
Do not choose a mango by the colour of its skin because, when ripe, the fruit can be recognised by how supple its flesh feels. Let yourself be guided by its fragrance but be careful, if the fruit has black patches it is too ripe!
