Sessile

The term sessile has two meanings:

  • Firstly, an organ (leaf, eye, etc.) which is directly fixed to the body of an organism without any intermediary part (peduncle, petiole).
  • Secondly, any organism, generally aquatic, which lives directly on a substrate such as sponges or barnacles.
