Sclerotome

The sclerotome is an embryonic unit responsible for formation of the axial skeleton (vertebrae, but also the intervertebral discs) and paraxial skeleton (limbs), together with part of the occiput (base of the skull).

The term is also used to describe a surgical instrument.
