Phylogeny

It has been widely accepted since the time of Darwin that living beings all descend from each other. Until the 1960s, comparisons between morphologies, behaviours, and geographical distribution of species were the only means available of classifying species. The discovery that homologous proteins (or nucleic acids) had amino acid (or base) sequences which varied between species provided a new way of studying them: phylogeny.
