Phagocytosis

Phagocytosis is a mechanism which allows some specialised cells (macrophages, granulocytes, neutrophils) and some unicellular organisms (protists) to ingest foreign particles such as bacteria, cell waste, dust etc. Phagocytosis plays an important role in immune function and is one of the body's defence mechanisms, particularly in bacterial and parasitic infections.
