Perineum

The perineum is part of the urinary and gastro-intestinal reproductive system

Function of the perineum

The perineum is a group of muscles which support the genital organs between the anus and vulva or penis. It is important for urinary and anal continence and also for sexual pleasure.

Structure of the perineum

The perineum can be divided into two triangles which each contain several muscles:

  • the urogenital or anterior triangle
  • and the anal or posterior triangle.

The perineum (in this case in a man) is formed from a group of muscle. DR Credits The perineum (in this case in a man) is formed from a group of muscle. DR Credits
