Neoteny

In neoteny (a type of paedomorphosis), the body grows to normal adult size but retains childhood characteristics. The best known example of animal neotony is the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), an amphibian which keeps its gills, typical of the larval stage, in adulthood.
