Mucilage

Mucilage is a polysaccharide substance (composed of carbohydrates) found in many vegetables plants. It swells in contact with water and forms a viscous solution (gel), which is occasionally sticky.

Mucilage is used to store water, particularly in succulent plants (cactuses and other succulent plants), and also to adhere to insects (carnivorous plants).
