Micro-organism

Micro-organisms are etymologically "small organisms", therefore living beings, which are so small that they can only be seen by a microscope.

The term encompasses a range of very different species, both prokaryotes (bacteria) and eukaryotes (yeasts and algae). Some also include viruses, but these are at the boundary of the definition of "living being".
