Haplodiploidy

Haplodiploidy describes a means of sex determination by which the males develop from a virgin egg (unfertilised) and the females from a fertilised egg. The males are therefore haploid as they only have the set of chromosomes from the egg laying female and the females are diploid as they have both sets of chromosomes: one from the mother, another from the father.
