Cardiac muscle

The myocardium or cardiac muscle is one of the striated muscles of the human body.

However it is relatively unusual as it contracts rhythmically and involuntarily (unlike skeletal striated muscles).

The myocardium is composed of specialist cardiac muscle cells, cardiac myocytes, which are unable to remain contracted for long periods of time.
