Bottleneck

A bottleneck is an phenomenon which is produced when a population is largely reduced over at least one generation. The small number of remaining reproducers therefore only transmit a fraction of the initial genetic diversity to the next generations. This results in genetic depletion in the population.

Combined with the founding gene effect, bottlenecks are one of the ways in which species evolve.
