Bile duct

The bile duct is part of the digestive and endocrine system.

The function of the bile duct

is to connect the gallbladder to the intestine at the duodenum. It is a passage for bile, a fluid which has an alkaline pH which promotes digestion.

Structure of the bile duct

The common bile duct begins at the junction between the cystic duct which comes from the gallbladder and the hepatic duct which comes from the liver. Its path ends at the ampulla of Vater, in the duodenum.
