Autapomorphy

In phylogenetics, an autapomorphic feature is a developed characteristic which is specific to a taxon. It is therefore not present in any other taxon.

Autapomorphies therefore define the taxons down to the species.

For example, in the Molluscs (the Mollusca branch), the bivalve shell is an autapomorphic feature of the Lamellibranch class.
