Allopatry

Allopatry is the geographical isolation of two populations of the same species. This geographical isolation leads to reproductive isolation.

Consequently, genetic exchange between the two allopatric populations no longer takes place and each can evolve in its own way.

Allopatry is therefore a mechanism of speciation.
